Adventures Of Serial Buddies (2011) This might be your thing or it might not but they are calling it the very first serial killer buddy movie of all time which caught my eye. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 4,4/10. "A" for originality but that doesn't necessarily mean it is good. The characters are very quirky and need the right actors to pull them off. Somehow they nearly did just that. Gregory (Paul Ashton) is a devout Catholic who wants to kill evil people in order to grant them safe passage to heaven, Gary (Hal Rudnick) is an assembly worker at a trophy shop who wants to kill potential trophy winners, Graham (Todd Wilson) is Gary's intern who will do anything to become a trophy maker and Vinny Van Go (Gian Molina) drives a road emergency van just to make friends. A coincidental encounter forces these four dim-witted rejects to join forces and embark upon an idiotic and altogether hilarious road trip adventure - encountering the likes of skinheads, fraternity jocks, sorority babes, missing children, bikers, porn stars, clowns, and Kathie Lee Gifford! If the boys aren't careful they might just become human, in what is "the very first serial killer buddy movie of all time." And they somehow got Henry Winkler to narrate this attempt to be truly memorable flick. The thing about movies that set out to be strange and think of cult status is they try too hard to be that "cult" type flick and it ends up feeling so forced. This movie would be better received if they didn't try so hard to make you think this is the next underground comedy hit. The plot plays out more like skits that got pieced together than a coherent idea. Artie Lange was pretty funny but underused, as was Christopher Lloyd. It might be your thing, might not. I found the leads too irritating to watch again.

Refuge (2023) If you are a fan of horror looking for genuine scares and a coherent plot, you may want to look elsewhere. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 3.6/10. This one started by catching my attention with a story about Sergeant Rick Pedroni, fresh from the battlefield of Afghanistan, returning home not just as a veteran but as a vessel for a malevolent demon. The early stages of the film build up tension effectively, blending elements of horror with the psychological struggles of a soldier grappling with PTSD. However, as the plot progresses, the movie takes a nosedive into absurdity, losing its grip on the initially promising storyline. Aston McAuley, whose portrayal of Rick Pedroni should have been the anchor of the film, delivers a disappointingly bland performance. Whether possessed or not, his lack of emotional depth makes it hard to invest in his character’s fate. A stronger, more expressive actor could have made Pedroni's transformation and internal battles far more compelling. Instead, we are left with a protagonist who feels wooden and unrelatable, undermining the film’s emotional core. The soundtrack further detracts from the experience. In a genre where music is crucial for building suspense and heightening fear, this flick opts for a score that feels mismatched and often out of place. The musical choices disrupt the atmosphere rather than enhancing it, making it difficult to remain immersed in the unfolding horror. The narrative takes an especially ridiculous turn in its climax. What starts as a localized, personal battle against demonic possession absurdly escalates into a full-scale confrontation involving the entire U.S. military. This bizarre plot development, pitting American soldiers against Arabic worshippers in an over-the-top and culturally insensitive showdown, shatters any semblance of plausibility. It’s a regrettable decision that not only strains credibility but also veers into uncomfortable and potentially offensive territory. The film's only saving grace in its conclusion is the appearance of a local Islamic cleric who conveniently happens to be an experienced exorcist. This deus ex machina resolution feels contrived and far too convenient, wrapping up the story in a way that is neither satisfying nor believable. In summary, it squanders its potential with poor casting, ill-suited music, and a ludicrously exaggerated climax. It could have been a tense and thought-provoking exploration of demonic possession and personal trauma, but instead, it devolves into an unintentional parody of itself. For fans of horror looking for genuine scares and a coherent plot, you may want to look elsewhere.

Squatter (2020) I am not going to dignify this one by expanding on my initial comments and from what I recall, this score still might be generous for this slasher flick. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 2,4/10. Another b-budget slasher film and this one is missing the violent kills and boobs for no apparent reason. Those are just what slasher movies have to have. We also get two unrelated stories of who the killer might be, one via newspaper clippings at the beginning and the other a told story. They don't bother saying which one is the killer but you won't care. It's almost finals and while granny's away, a wrestling-obsessed, machete-wielding squatter plays - body slamming guests at the hottest party of the year. The filmmakers had to call it the hottest party since if that is their idea of hot, I would love to see what a boring party looks like. The acting is beyond awful and the ending was just plain stupid. The director could've just yelled "CUT" in mid-sentence and finished it, which is pretty much what appears to have happened. Don't bother if it hits your streaming video of choice. I think I only gave this any points due to laughing at it. I am not going to dignify this one by expanding on my initial comments and from what I recall, this score still might be generous for this slasher flick.

Right now that only choice is Amazon.

The Exorcism (2024) Crowe carried horror flick with high production values and strong performances that is ultimately let down by a lackluster story and sluggish pacing. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 4.6/10. It has an interesting idea with a troubled actor spiraling during the shooting of a supernatural horror film, blurring the lines between his past addictions and potential sinister forces. Despite the potential for a gripping narrative, the movie unfortunately falls flat in several key areas. My first thought was how in the world they convinced Russell Crowe to take on the lead role. Crowe's performance is by far the standout element in an otherwise bland film, providing a level of gravitas that the story sorely lacks. His portrayal of the struggling actor lends the character a depth and complexity that kept me engaged, even as the plot meanders. Ryan Simpkins, playing the estranged daughter, delivers a commendable performance as well. She effectively conveys the confusion and concern of a daughter torn between fear for her father's relapse and suspicion of darker forces at work. The dynamic between Crowe and Simpkins is one of the film's few highlights, adding a layer of emotional resonance. The movie does offer a few well-executed scares, primarily through the use of unsettling imagery. These moments are fleeting, however, and not enough to sustain the tension or excitement needed for a compelling horror film. The slow pacing further detracts from the experience, with long stretches that fail to build suspense or advance the plot in a meaningful way. What I did find interesting is the exploration of addiction as a form of possession. This metaphorical approach is thought-provoking, drawing parallels between the protagonist's struggles with substance abuse and the demonic influences he faces. Unfortunately, this concept is not fully developed, leaving it feeling more like a missed opportunity than a central theme. Overall, the flick is a mediocre film that benefits from high production values and strong performances from its leads but is ultimately let down by a lackluster story and sluggish pacing. It’s a movie that had the potential to be much more, but despite its few bright spots, it doesn't quite deliver the compelling horror experience I was hoping for.

Gemini Man (2019) During the Olympics I will try and catch up on these drafts in various stages of completion such as this visually stunning and technical marvel. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 6,3/10. Worth all the hype? Yes and no. It is a mixed bag that delivers some truly impressive moments but falls short of being an extraordinary film. The most notable aspect is the groundbreaking digital de-aging technology used to create a younger version of Will Smith, reminiscent of his days on the streets of Bel Air. Watching Smith's youthful self engage in intense combat with his older counterpart is visually stunning and a technical marvel. The film revolves around Henry Brogan, an aging assassin, who decides to retire but soon finds himself targeted by a younger clone of himself, 25 years his junior and at the peak of his abilities. This premise sets the stage for a series of high-octane action sequences that are well-directed and thrilling to watch. From the beginning, this was always a pet project for Ang Lee who was determined to push the envelope as far as the technology was concerned. Not only is it filmed in 3-D but also runs at a smooth 120FPS which isn't standard at all for movies. But beyond the cool tech, the flick does touch on intriguing themes surrounding cloning and the ethical dilemmas it presents. However, aside from these brief explorations, the film leans heavily into standard action movie territory. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it makes for an entertaining summer popcorn flick, but it lacks the depth and originality that could have elevated it to something more memorable. Clive Owen, who plays the antagonist, appears disengaged, possibly due to the prolonged filming process. His performance lacks the intensity and charisma needed to make his character compelling. And when you are playing the role of a cross between Frankenstein and G-d you are going to want to give it your full attention. Additionally, the inclusion of an Asian character for comic relief feels like a tired stereotype and falls flat in terms of humor. Still, it excels in its action scenes and the dual performances by Will Smith, but it doesn't fully live up to the high expectations set by its ambitious premise and groundbreaking technology. It's a decent watch for action fans and those interested in the latest advancements in all things as part of the science of film, but it may leave others wanting more in terms of story and character development.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part Three (2024) Finally the third and would be the best part of the trilogy had the ending not seemed to be so rushed and I promise next time I'll check ahead. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 5.6/10. Finally part 3 and hopefully the last, not because I haven't enjoyed it but because I didn't look up the length in the first place LOL. I have been watching and attempting to watch this since January. Now fully revealed as the ultimate threat to existence, the Anti-Monitor wages an unrelenting attack on the surviving Earths that struggle for survival in a pocket universe. One by one, these worlds and all their inhabitants are vaporized! On the planets that remain, even time itself is shattered, and heroes from the past join the Justice League and their rag-tag allies against the epitome of evil. But as they make their last stand, will the sacrifice of the superheroes be enough to save us all? Nice to see the Death Star, I mean Warworld play a part in saving the multiverse. The three installments are very consistent in quality so you know what you will be getting. I am just unsure if I enjoy this style of animation. Some of the time it looks fine and others it just looks really cheap to me. I also didn't like this weird rushed ending after all this build-up throughout. I cannot go further into it, but you will see what I mean if you watch. Since I haven't read the comics, I am not sure if this is keeping consistent with the original material or a complete botch of the finale. I am sure if it is the latter, all of you true fans are quite pissed off.

Brand new (7.16.24) so still a bit costly on these streamers but the price will come down.

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Two (2024) Part two was the weakest of the 3 in my opinion and is the installment that got me wondering if I was a fan of this style of animation or not. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 5.5/10. Dammit, there is a third part. I would've waited had I known that. I found this one dragged a bit compared to the first one but still is decent for fans of DC. The one thing that jumped out at me at the end of this movie is that these are each supposed to be stand-alone movies but so far I don't see these having much value in that capacity. The Anti-Monitor is still on the loose destroying different Earths while the Monitor has recruited his team from across the multiverse to fight back. An endless army of shadow demons bent on the destruction of all reality swarms over our world and all parallel Earths! The only thing opposing them is the mightiest team of metahumans ever assembled. But not even the combined power of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and all their fellow superheroes can slow down the onslaught of this invincible horde. What mysterious force is driving them? And how do the long-buried secrets of the Monitor and Supergirl threaten to crush our last defense?

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part One (2024) This will be a three-parter today and is more or less my quick reaction and notes to this DC comic story involving the entire superhero crew. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 5.7/10. I had been waiting for part 2 to be released so I could check this all out in one day. Today is that day. Death is coming. Worse than death: oblivion. Not just for our Earth, but for everyone, everywhere, in every universe! Against this ultimate destruction, the mysterious Monitor has gathered the greatest team of Super Heroes ever assembled. But what can the combined might of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and hundreds of Super Heroes from multiple Earths even do to save all of reality from an unstoppable antimatter armageddon?!

Bad Boys: Ride Or Die (2024) Another sequel with well-executed action, engaging new characters, and the iconic duo, making this a must-watch for franchise fans and action enthusiasts. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 6.9/10. The latest installment in the Bad Boys franchise, Ride or Die, delivers an exhilarating blend of action, humor, and heart, solidifying its place as a standout summer blockbuster. As soon as this one ended, I thought "7" and not quite as good as Bad Boys for Life but close. Hence how I fell a decimal point below. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reprise their iconic roles as Detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, proving once again that their chemistry is the backbone of this beloved series. The plot kicks off with a compelling premise with the duo setting out to clear the name of their late former Captain (Joe Pantoliano), only to find themselves on the run. This high-stakes narrative not only provides plenty of adrenaline-pumping action but also deepens the emotional stakes for our protagonists. Placing the duo as enemy number one not only of the police but also every hitman in town looking for a huge score offers up plenty of opportunities for intense action scenes. One of the film's strengths aside from these intense scenes lies in its seamless integration of new characters. Dennis Greene's upgraded version of Reggie is a standout, bringing a fresh dynamic to the flick and provides easily the best action scene while giving the team ample room for some great comedic narration throughout it. Jacob Scipio's Armando also gets an expanded role, adding depth and intrigue compared to how he was used in the previous film. Both characters are likely to play pivotal roles in future sequels, which seems to be a calculated move by the filmmakers. The humor is on par with its predecessors, balancing the intense action with moments of levity that remind us why we love these characters. The Miami backdrop is as tantalizing as ever, providing a vibrant and visually stunning setting for the film's explosive set pieces. In conclusion, I thought it was a fun, thrilling ride that successfully built on the momentum of its predecessor. With its well-executed action, engaging new characters, and the undeniable charm of its leading duo, this film is a must-watch for fans of the franchise and action enthusiasts alike. My prediction is that upcoming sequels have already been outlined, especially with the strong performances from the new additions to the cast.

Tarot (2024) If you're a horror fan looking for a decent flick to pass the time, this might be worth a watch but don't expect it to leave a lasting impression. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 5.2/10. This flick found itself in the spotlight as my featured trailer of the week, but did it truly deserve that honor? With a mix of decent jump scares and visually striking creatures, this PG-13 horror flick offers a familiar yet entertaining experience for genre enthusiasts. The story revolves around a group of friends who, in typical horror fashion, recklessly violate the sacred rule of Tarot readings. This careless act unleashes an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. As fate would have it, they find themselves in a deadly race against time, each confronting their terrifying destinies. One of the film's highlights is Jacob Batalon's performance as Paxton. His presence on screen is magnetic, often stealing scenes and adding a layer of charm and relatability to the otherwise predictable plot. Batalon's ability to balance humor and fear brings a refreshing dynamic to the movie. The creatures, designed to mimic the Tarot cards, are another thing that jumped out at me. Their eerie and unique appearances contribute to some genuinely creepy moments, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the film. However, beyond these visuals, it struggles to break free from the conventions of the genre. Despite its promising premise, the movie follows a by-the-book approach to horror. It adheres to many of the tropes and clichés we've seen countless times before. The jump scares, while effective, are predictable, and the storyline doesn't venture far from the typical formula of friends facing a supernatural threat. Basically, it delivers a serviceable horror experience with some standout moments, particularly thanks to Batalon's performance and the creatively designed creatures. However, its reliance on familiar tropes and predictable scares prevents it from becoming a memorable entry in the genre. If you're a horror fan looking for a decent flick to pass the time, this flick might be worth a watch but don't expect it to leave a lasting impression.

Here is what is coming in August on Netflix for all that use it. #jackmeatstv

https://www.tvguide.com/news/new-on-netflix/

D-Railed (2018) Maybe you can let the poor acting and lack of tension slide and get a bit of entertainment out of this action/horror flick. I somehow did. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 4.1/10. Passengers on a murder mystery train that crashes into a river must decide whether to risk waiting for help in the wreckage or take their chances in the murky depths below. This is one of those trailers that ends up exceeding the quality of the film. The flick doesn't have nearly the suspense shown and most of the scenes with the monster are so dark you cannot make out what is happening. I also do not know what Lance Henriksen is doing in this below-average b-budget flick. Maybe he owed someone a favor since it wasn't for the finished product. I suppose the script may have been an interesting read since it dabbles in quite a few genres without ever sticking the landing on any of them. The flick chugs along (I had to) at a decent pace and you will most likely have a glimmer of hope at it being at least a worthwhile distraction but then it works its way into the finale and goes completely off the rails (pun intended). Yet with the negatives abound I still found the movie to be strangely watchable and I never felt like I was suffering through it for the sake of my OCD about finishing films once I have started them. So maybe you can let the poor acting and lack of tension slide and get a bit of entertainment out of it. I somehow did.

Space Sharks (2024) Oh, this movie is bad to the point I needed to include photo evidence of its absurdity and if I hadn't laughed at it a couple of times it would score lower.. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 1.8/10. I don't have high hopes for this but I checked and it isn't made by the Asylum. A military experiment conducted on a space station goes horribly wrong, sending a new breed of weaponized sharks to Earth with only one mission: destroy everything in their path. It starts out with a CGI demo of a spaceship straight out of mid-2000s computer training courses. In other words, not very good. I don't know who he owes money to, but Eric Roberts got roped into this flick. If the music sounds familiar to you, it is pre-programmed on Casio keyboards, that is why you have heard it. They also boost a weapons array proudly displayed on some peg board you have seen in everyone's garage all across the USA. The flick didn't take long at all to establish what kind of budget they are working with and Roberts may not be an A-lister anymore but I can assure you that is where the entire budget went. With a running time of 70 measlyneighbor's minutes, you wouldn't think they would waste so much time with some dude walking around in his neighbors backyard, I mean, vast forest while some 80s-level EDM beat plays on loop. Oh, no, the plants have arrived, to the cutting-edge sounds used in the 1950s scifi flix LOL. i am wondering if these people hiking are the stupid kickstarters who contributed the most to filming this work of nonsense. It took over half the movie to even mention sharks. When we do see the "sharks," forget eating the dude, just backhand decapitate him since we all know sharks have arms and legs.

I had to snap a picture for you all to see just to make sure you don't think I am making this shit up. Aside from being bipedal, they also seem to have teleportation in their arsenal of tricks, or invisibility, maybe both. Apparently, they couldn't even afford prop EGGS they had to CGI them into the scenes. Holy crap, that is the end of the movie? I have a feeling that the writers who shall remain anonymous had no idea what to do with the ideas so they just gave up. It is possible they watched what they had filmed so far and decided it couldn't get any better so they opted to make it even worse. Mr. Roberts if you read this, please feel free to say no to trash like this. I have nothing but mad respect for you ever since I put in the VHS of Best of the Best so I would like performances like that to be how I think of you. Everyone else reading this, I laughed once, more at the filmmakers but that earns the entire score.

The Complex: Lockdown (2020) I realized that I had PLAYED this as an interactive movie a few years ago so I breezed through to get the feel as a stand-alone flick. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 4.0/10. After being tasked with saving the life of a potential bio-weapons terrorist, two London scientists find themselves in a locked-down laboratory with time and air running out. At the time this was made, it was VERY relevant with COVID running rampant. I would get more into this but I didn't watch it fully. Now before you freak out knowing I never start a movie and not finish it, I realized about 10 minutes into this movie I hadn't seen it before, I PLAYED it. This was an interactive movie that I already had gone through with my better half on my PC. So we had already made decisions during this movie to affect the outcome. That rating is what I would say after watching it as a stand-alone flick. It definitely loses a lot of the flair when choosing reactions is removed from the equation. You end up left with a fairly straightforward made-for-TV quality sci/fi flick. The acting is enough to just get by from the majority of the cast. Michelle Mylett does an adequate job despite what you may read elsewhere if you consider that she among others had to act out the same scene multiple times with entirely different reactions to each set of circumstances. The plot has to leave itself wiggle room for how certain things go so I assume they just choose what the filmmakers thought was the most cohesive and entertaining way to go through. There is no way I can recall what choices I made or where they even were from the 45 or so minutes I just watched but I did make sure and watch the final ending and I know that is NOT the ending I got on my computer. I actually liked this ending better. If I add back what I remember thinking a few years ago, I would tack on another point for the novelty of interacting with this film but even then I wasn't really wowed with it. Another thing was the very tame nature of the entire production. No kills, no real tension even though the situation calls for far more of that and nothing really went so far off script that you ended up surprised. The entire movie is set in that lab or offices upstairs so there isn't any variety of scenery. I would think after knowing it does have that ability to be played in a choose-your-own-adventure style, you would be very hesitant to bother with viewing it like this, even if it is on Freevee or the likes, let alone paying to rent it (feel free to click away though ;)

Arena Wars (2024) The story borrows from other films in the surviving incredible odds to become a free man so if you temper your expectations you might have some fun. #jackmeatsflix Sonny MahalEmpire

My quick rating - 3.8/10. First off, a big thanks to Sonny Mahal for giving me the opportunity to check out Arena Wars in advance. The movie features a solid cast with Michael Madsen, Eric Roberts, and Robert LaSardo who are all personal favorites of mine. Roberts doesn't have much to say in this one and unfortunately, LaSardo's time onscreen was short-lived. Madsen does stick around as the TV shows sleazy host and does provide some of the humor that is needed all the way into the credits. Set in 2045, the plot revolves around convicted criminals who are given the chance to compete in the world's top televised sporting event, Arena Wars. The goal? Survive seven rooms and seven of the country's most vicious killers to regain their freedom. I was hoping this was going to setup some memorable kills but I ended up a bit disappointed in the tame murders instead of drenching the rooms with gore. Similar concepts have been explored before, with JCVD in Death Warrant, Goldberg in Half Past Dead 2, and the movie that this flick immediately reminded me of, American Samurai. The villains in each stage felt akin to those in Running Man, though not quite as grandiose. Luke Bender, portrayed by John Wells, seemed a bit tentative during his fight scenes. It's hard to pinpoint if this was due to choreography issues or inexperience. A touch of subtle humor was woven in, which was a nice addition. The "innocent man" angle had potential but could have been more fleshed out with flashbacks or more vivid descriptions. Out of the convicts, the character of MMA fighter Billie, played by Kylie Fulmer, stood out as one of the more intriguing figures. Interestingly, the action scenes not centered around the main character were some of the film's highlights. The low budget is apparent, with audio issues at times and the reuse of the same sets. However, knowing this going in helps set expectations. Despite borrowing heavily from other films, the movie still manages to be enjoyable. It’s not one of the best offerings from Mahal Empire, but it’s a fun ride if you’re in the mood for some action-packed escapism.

Outer Range: Season 2 (2024) Unfortunately after picking up the great story and ditching the poor soap opera dialogue, the show doesn't get renewed for a third season. #jackmeatstv

My quick rating -6.8/10. You will get the majority of what you need to know if you read my review from Season 1. I was glad to see the soap opera-style conversations was nearly eliminated for this season. It brought the show back to where it should have been. Imogen Poots character Autumn really captivated the show. I think I have pointed out how great Josh Brolin is on this show so I figured I would point out another great performance. The whole cast is exceptional, to be honest, and is what will bring you back for more of the mystery around the giant hole in the ground. The only problem is the show has NOT been renewed so there will not be a third season as of now. This is one of those shows that was not nearly done with the story they were telling and left plenty of narrative to continue. Season 2 picks up right where you left off from the previous and there is almost no way for me to go into much plot without spoilers. There are more issues and alliances between the Tillersons and the Abbotts, along with some more traveling back and forth between centuries. The crafting of the story that gives us the background to Royals' (Brolin) upbringing does help us appreciate some of the first season elements a bit more, at least it did for me. Some new relationships were explored that apparently have intermixed in other time periods to keep the scifi connection alive. I am doing the best I can to describe while being so vague, I apologize. If you are interested in Quantum Leap and any of the Yellowstone western shows, this is a cross between them with some other interesting ideas dropped in there. Worth watching especially if you already have Prime, otherwise see the next line and check it out. 07.21.24 so I will update this if anything changes on a thrid season.

Both seasons are streaming on Prime exclusively and season one is on Freevee.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) George Miller returns and brings us a well-made, gripping tale of vengeance and survival solidifying Furiosa's place as a central figure in this iconic saga. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 7.8/10. In the vast, desolate expanse of a post-apocalyptic wasteland, George Miller once again transports us to the brutal and unforgiving world of Mad Max. This flick is a high-octane, adrenaline-pumping thrill ride that delves deep into the origins of one of the franchise’s most compelling characters, Furiosa. The plot centers around Furiosa (played by Alyla Browne in her younger years) who rises against the tyrannical ruler Dementus (Chris Hemsworth) in a relentless pursuit of her homeland. Alongside her are a group of fierce female prisoners, deranged worshippers, and a big can of whoop-ass. Together, they navigate a perilous journey filled with explosive action and poignant moments of camaraderie and resilience. The action scenes are nothing short of spectacular. Miller has outdone himself, crafting sequences that are both breathtaking and brutal, showcasing the harsh reality of this dystopian world. The choreography is meticulously executed, with every car chase and combat scene leaving you anxiously awaiting the next. The wasteland itself is a character, rendered in hauntingly beautiful detail that makes the world feel both vast and suffocatingly claustrophobic. Alyla Browne's performance as the young Furiosa is exceptional. She brings a raw intensity to the role, capturing the character’s fierce determination and vulnerability. Her portrayal provides a deeper understanding of Furiosa's motivations and the experiences that shaped her into the formidable warrior we first met in Fury Road. And do not fret for Anya Taylor-Joy taking over the older version since she effortless continues with an equally spectacular performance. Miller's storytelling is masterful, weaving a tale of vengeance that is both personal and epic in scale. He provides a rich backstory for  Furiosa, which I believe she needed, answering questions and expanding the lore in a way that feels satisfying. The film is a testament to his vision, offering a deeper exploration of the themes and characters that have made the Mad Max series so enduring. If you are wondering about good ole' Max Rockatansky's presence, he does make an appearance, albeit briefly. His cameo is a clever nod to the franchise’s roots, and while fleeting, it’s a moment that fans will appreciate. The flick is a well-made, gripping tale of vengeance and survival. It stands as a worthy addition to the  Mad Max universe, offering both a thrilling ride and a compelling exploration of one of its most intriguing characters.  George Miller has once again delivered a film that is as thought-provoking as it is exhilarating, solidifying  Furiosa’s place as a central figure in this iconic saga. If you have been snoozing on this sequel for some reason, don't. It is well worth the watch.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2014) I have a double feature today for this revitalized franchise and I will leave my review as-is from a decade ago since it was more my notes right after watching. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 8,3/10. There really is no reason for a long-winded review. Too many great things about this movie to point out. The way that "Max" is used was done so well to make the main character seem as though he isn't the focus. Furiosa (Charlize Theron) was astounding in her role as the heavy (strange, huh?). I also thought Tom Hardy was a fabulous choice to play Max Rockatansky. The movie itself starts off in high gear and rarely lets up to allow us lucky viewers a moment to catch our breath. Visually stunning in a very dark way such as the others were : A world where gas=gold and water is a commodity. Violence is non-important, only survival is. So well done throughout with every bit of attention paid to detail to make you feel the desperation. I could go on and on as many reviews I am sure have, but it is tough to keep up, I may just have to watch it again. Go in knowing you will like this movie for many reasons. It knocked me back a step since I am used to Hollywood screwing up true greats but this time they definitely got it right. Enjoy, I know I did. It's an excellent movie that does justice to the series.

Dead Boy Detectives: Season 1 (2024) The brilliant Neil Gaiman brings us a show that offers quality supernatural entertainment, making it a must-watch for fans of mystery. #jackmeatstv

My quick rating - 7.8/10. Well, that was a refreshing and original addition to the supernatural genre or nearly any genre you would like to place this since it has a bit of everything. Written and produced by the brilliant Neil Gaiman, the show offers a delightful blend of humor, intriguing mysteries, and unique characters that kept me thoroughly entertained. The series follows Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine, two young detectives who have decided to forego the afterlife in favor of staying on Earth to investigate crimes involving supernatural and occasional horror elements. This premise sets the stage for a series of captivating and otherworldly cases that are as intriguing as they are entertaining. The characters of Charles (Jayden Revri) and Edwin (George Rexstrew) are well-developed and endearing, each bringing their own quirks and charm to the show. Their dynamic is both humorous and heartwarming, adding a layer of depth to the supernatural investigations they undertake. The supporting cast also contributes significantly to the show's appeal, with each character adding their own unique flavor. Be it a landlord wielding a meat cleaver (Briana Cuoco) or the self-proclaimed cat king (Lukas Gage) each is not only well thought out but acted accordingly. Gaiman's writing shines through in the clever dialogue and well-crafted storylines. The show balances its darker themes with a good dose of humor, making it a fun and engaging watch. The unearthly elements are seamlessly integrated into the plot, providing a fresh take on the detective genre. And let's face it, as I have been saying for years, all cats are plotting their ways to kill us. Visually, the show is impressive, with high-quality production values that bring the eerie and mysterious world to life. The special effects are well-executed, enhancing the supernatural aspects without overshadowing the story. It is just a well-made and highly enjoyable series that stands out for its originality, humor, and compelling characters—offering good fun and entertainment, making it a must-watch for fans of supernatural mysteries. With this strong first season, I have hopeful anticipation for a second season to continue the adventures of Charles and Edwin.

Netflix is the place to stream this one.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) The newest Ghostbuster flick combines the nostalgic elements of the original with fresh storytelling, resulting in a film that feels both familiar and new. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 6.5/10. Frozen Empire successfully blends nostalgic charm with fresh, exciting elements in a way that honors the original while forging a new path for the revitalized franchise. Directed by Gil Kenan, this latest installment sees the return of the Spengler family to New York City, reuniting with the iconic firehouse and the original Ghostbusters. The film manages to capture the magic of the classic while introducing innovative concepts that breathe new life into the series. For fans who fondly remember the original Ghostbusters – myself included, having first seen it at the Twin Drive-In during my junior high days – Frozen Empire is a delightful trip down memory lane. The film pays homage to its roots with familiar faces and beloved locations, while also pushing the boundaries of ghostbusting technology with a top-secret research lab that promises to take their ghost-hunting capabilities to the next level. The plot centers around the discovery of an ancient artifact that unleashes a malevolent force, threatening to plunge the world into a second Ice Age. This premise provides a thrilling backdrop for the action, bringing together both the old and new generations of Ghostbusters in a race against time to save the world. The return to New York City, with its iconic skyline and bustling streets, adds a sense of grandeur and urgency to the story. The Spengler family, led by the ever-charismatic Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace, deliver strong performances that anchor the new narrative. They are joined by the original Ghostbusters – Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson – whose chemistry and camaraderie remain as infectious as ever. And let's face it, Paul Rudd is damn good in his comedic roles. The dynamic between the seasoned veterans and the enthusiastic newcomers is a highlight, offering plenty of heartwarming and humorous moments. The visual effects are top-notch, particularly in the depiction of the icy cataclysm that threatens to engulf the city. The ghost designs are both inventive and reminiscent of the original film’s charm, striking a balance that should satisfy long-time fans and newcomers alike. The action sequences are well-choreographed, blending practical effects with cutting-edge CGI to create thrilling and immersive ghostbusting adventures. One thing I really enjoyed is its ability to mix nostalgia with new ideas seamlessly. The references to the original movies are plentiful but not overbearing, and the film wisely focuses on expanding the lore and introducing new characters and challenges. The incorporation of a top-secret research lab hints at exciting possibilities for the franchise's future, setting the stage for more innovative ghost-hunting escapades. Even though I found this one to be a step down from Afterlife, this is still a fun and entertaining addition to the beloved franchise. It skillfully combines the nostalgic elements of the original with fresh, inventive storytelling, resulting in a film that feels both familiar and new. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, this movie offers an enjoyable ride that pays tribute to the past while looking forward to the future.

I updated the trailers page on my site, but only with THIS new look at a movie that is very much on my list to see ASAP. #jackmeatsflix

Spaghetti (2023) This flick was labeled horror but I was left unsure if it’s meant to be taken seriously or as a parody and it still failed on either side. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 2.4/10. Nurse Lena Simon (Brittany Lucio) seems to have found the perfect man in savvy businessman Scotty Sharpe (Newton Mayenge), but when she suspects him of seeing someone else, she takes the unusual advice of her best friend Toni and performs a voodoo spell on him. This flick was just disappointing on various fronts, featuring novice actors, subpar sound quality, and puzzling casting choices. The film struggles to find its footing, with a plot that promises horror and suspense but delivers neither. The casting choices are particularly baffling, as the chemistry between the leads is virtually nonexistent. The "actors" fail to bring depth to their characters, making it difficult to invest in their stories in the slightest. The sound quality is another major issue, often detracting from the viewing experience. Poor audio can make it challenging to follow dialogue, further distancing you from the narrative. Additionally, the film’s classification as a horror movie is quite a joke, as it seems more suited to a very young audience rather than fans of the genre. One memorable yet perplexing instance I noted involves a character enduring multiple head stabbings yet oddly remaining mobile, evoking unintended laughter rather than the intended horror. Such moments highlight the film’s inability to balance its tone, often leading to confusion about whether it’s meant to be taken seriously or as a parody. Overall, this is an underwhelming experience, failing to deliver on expectations for both seasoned horror fans and casual viewers alike and that is putting it mildly.

If that entices you, Amazon seems the only place to check this one out: Justwatch.

Deer Camp '86 (2022) If you're looking for an entertaining and strangely thought-provoking slasher, this one is worth checking out for the creativity and stupidity. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 5.4/10. This flick takes us back to the fall of 1986, where six knuckleheads from Detroit venture north for their annual deer hunting trip. However, this time, their tradition turns into a nightmare as something horrific awakens, turning the hunters into the hunted. The characters in this film are incredibly relatable, reminding me of the idiots from my high school days. Their antics and camaraderie add a layer of authenticity and humor to the story, making the film strangely entertaining even if it isn't typical Hollywood fare. The cast delivers believable performances, each bringing a unique flavor to their roles. Not to be rude, but their names aren't needed since they work as a team. As a slasher film, Deer Camp '86 subtly slides in a message, which is a refreshing twist. It's not just mindless gore; there's an underlying commentary that adds depth to the narrative. The ending, while open to interpretation, worked for me. I may have overthought its meaning, but it fits the overall tone and direction of the film. The kills are well within the budget constraints, yet they manage to be more creative and effective than many indie films that rely on cheap CGI blood splatter. The practical effects are always the way to go, showcasing a level of ingenuity that enhances the horror elements. The film doesn't shy away from delivering brutal and memorable kills, which is a big plus for any slasher fan. Overall, I thought this was a surprisingly enjoyable film. It's not without its flaws, but its charm lies in its relatability, creative kills, and the subtle message woven into the horror. If you're looking for a slasher that's both entertaining and strangely thought-provoking, this one is worth checking out.

Amazon and several other streamers have this one a bit costlier than I would expect.

When Evil Lurks (2023) A terrifying and brutally effective horror flick showcasing impressive makeup effects and a relentless barrage of fear-inducing moments. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 7.3/10. This flick plunges you into a harrowing and unforgettable horror experience, solidifying its place as a must-see for genre enthusiasts. Directed by Demian Rugna, this film masterfully blends traditional horror elements with innovative storytelling, resulting in a chilling and brutal cinematic journey. Set in a remote village, the story follows two brothers, Pedro (Ezequiel Rodriguez) and Jimmy (Demian Salomón), who discover a man infected with a demonic entity on the verge of "giving birth" to evil itself. Their desperate attempt to dispose of the body inadvertently unleashes a wave of chaos, setting off a chain reaction of terror that engulfs their entire community. One of the first things I noticed was the extraordinary makeup effects. The practical effects work is nothing short of astonishing, creating some of the most grotesque and horrifying images I have seen in recent horror cinema. The meticulous attention to detail in the makeup and prosthetics enhances the film's visceral impact, making the supernatural elements feel disturbingly real. The demon-infected man, in particular, is a nightmarish vision that will haunt you long after the film ends. This one absolutely doesn't shy away from brutality, delivering scenes that are both shocking and relentless in their intensity. This unflinching approach to horror is both a strength and a potential deterrent for some audiences. The violence is graphic and, at times, overwhelmingly brutal, but it serves to heighten the sense of dread and hopelessness that permeates the narrative. Rugna's direction is deft, creating an atmosphere thick with tension and foreboding. The remote village setting enhances the sense of isolation and vulnerability, trapping the characters in a nightmarish scenario with no easy escape. The sound design and score are equally effective, using eerie silences and unsettling noises to amplify the terror. The performances are solid across the board, with Rodriguez and Salomón delivering compelling portrayals of brothers caught in a desperate situation. Their actions and decisions, though sometimes questionable, are driven by a palpable fear and urgency that makes their plight all the more gripping. This movie excels in creating moments of pure terror, offering images that sear into your mind and refuse to fade. It has an uncanny ability to sustain a high level of suspense and horror throughout its runtime making it very recommendable. This flick is a testament to the power of practical effects and atmospheric storytelling in crafting horror that truly lingers.

Lisa Frankenstein (2024) Here we have a quirky and amusing film that offers a fresh take on the teenage romance genre through its blend of horror and comedy. #jackmeatsflix

My quick rating - 5.5/10. In the delightful, genre-bending romp, director Zelda Williams takes us on a whimsical journey through 1989 with a unique twist on teenage romance. This film offers a quirky blend of dark comedy, horror, and heartfelt moments, making it a welcome entry in the contemporary revival of 80s nostalgia. The story follows Lisa (Kathryn Newton), a misunderstood high schooler whose life takes an extraordinary turn when she accidentally resurrects her crush, a handsome but decidedly dead heartthrob named Brad (Cole Sprouse). What follows is a hilariously macabre adventure as the newly animated couple navigates the pitfalls of young love while contending with the more practical issues of Brad's reanimated state, including the quest for a few missing body parts. Williams' direction shines in balancing the film's playful tone with its darker elements. The 80s setting is vibrantly brought to life with meticulous attention to detail, from the fashion and hairstyles to the pitch-perfect soundtrack that underscores the film's comedic beats. The use of period-appropriate music is particularly effective, enhancing the nostalgic ambiance and adding an extra layer of charm to the story. The film's quirky humor is one of its strongest suits, with Newton and Sprouse delivering endearing performances that capture the awkwardness and excitement of teenage puppy love. Their chemistry is palpable, and they both excel in scenes that require a blend of comedic timing and genuine emotion. Supporting characters add to the film’s charm, each bringing their own unique flair to the story’s zany proceedings. As expected, the film does stumble at times. The plot can feel somewhat disjointed, with certain scenes transitioning abruptly and a few subplots not fully developed. While the film's humor is mostly on point, some jokes fall flat or feel overly reliant on gross-out gags that might not appeal to all viewers. One standout scene involves Brad playing the piano with his reattached hand. The filmmakers' attention to detail caught me off guard, as the hand's coloration and makeup are impressively realistic, adding to the visual appeal and authenticity of the moment. It's little touches like these that made me appreciate this typical horror-comedy fare. It is a quirky and amusing film that offers a fresh take on the teenage romance genre through its blend of horror and comedy. While it has its flaws, the movie's charm, engaging performances, and nostalgic setting make it a fun watch for those looking to revisit the eccentric spirit of the 80s with a darkly humorous twist.
